Sister Pamela Smith

Pamela Smith, SS.C.M., Ph.D. (Sister Pam) has been resident of South Carolina since 2004. During that
time she has been dismayed with the attempts to reinstitute the death penalty and, most recently, to
find the legislature supporting the “secrecy bill,” which would make executions even more gruesome.
For decades, she has been involved in pro-peace, pro-life, anti-racism, and environmental initiatives in
one way or another—by teaching, public speaking and writing (books, articles, regular columns) and in
administrative roles in church-related organizations. Before coming to South Carolina, she lived and
worked at a number of locations in Pennsylvania, in Indiana, and in Michigan as a religious sister.
She is currently the ecumenical-interfaith officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston, which
covers the state. As adjunct associate professor of theology for Saint Leo University at its Charleston-
Columbia extension, she teaches adult students preparing for ordination as deacons and for service in
pastoral ministry. She is an avid fan of art museums, poetry, and music—classical, jazz, “golden oldies”
rock, and some country.
