"The extreme and gruesome spectacles of botched executions and livestreamed shootings illustrate why more and more Americans don’t trust the government with the death penalty. It is becoming increasingly clear that our state and federal governments lack the competence and the judgment to responsibly administer capital punishment.

The federal government’s decision to schedule the first military execution in 65 years shows they are out of step with public sentiment. The death penalty’s use has been steadily declining for over a decade with juries delivering fewer death sentences and an overwhelming majority of the states either ending capital punishment entirely or not carrying out executions."
