South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (SCADP) Speaks Out Against Brad Sigmon’s Scheduled Execution

Writer: SCADPSCADP

On February 7, 2025, the South Carolina Supreme Court issued an execution warrant for Brad Sigmon. He is scheduled to be executed on March 7, 2025.

A Statement from Executive Director, Rev. Hillary Taylor:

"Brad Sigmon is not the “worst of the worst”: he is someone from an impoverished background who was ill-equipped to defend himself in a court of law because of undiagnosed and inherited mental illness. He has not been involved in a single violent incident in his more than twenty years on death row. Because of his maturity and respect, security officers recognize him as a good influence on his fellow prisoners and have trusted him with many responsibilities, including passing out food trays, cleaning, running the laundry, and ‘assist[ing] the community with whatever they need.’ Executing the man Brad is today because of the tormented and ill man he was would accomplish nothing. It would only deprive the many people who have come to appreciate and rely upon Brad—his family, prisoners, guards, and ministers—of his example and aid. We call on Governor McMaster to grant clemency to Brad Sigmon and change his sentence from death to life.”

The mission of South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (SCADP) is to abolish the death penalty and catalyze criminal justice reform in South Carolina.
